Well, there’s so much doubtful news in the health care world these days, just have to share this: guess what happened in New York yesterday? Governor Paterson signed something called the Nursing Quality Protection Act which requires -among other things– hospitals to report:
the numbers of RNs and LPNs providing direct care
ratio of patients to nurses
number of unlicensed personnel providing direct care;
the incidence of adverse patient events such as medication errors and injuries;
the method the hospital uses for determining and adjusting staffing levels.
Hospitals fought it, nurses fought for it (big surprise there). The New York States Nurses Association has a nice little write up on their site.
